The Cake

  1. Grease and flour baking pans.
  2. In a clean dry bowl:
    1. Measure out flour, salt, and cream of tarter.
    2. Sift to mix.
  3. In another bowl:
    1. Cream butter and sugar until light and fluffy.
    2. Add coco powder and mix.
    3. Add eggs one at a time. Beat well after each egg to emulsify butter.
    4. Add vanilla
    5. Add the flour mixture alternately with milk mixing until ingredients are blended.
  4. Mix in boiling water.
  5. Add baking soda and quickly mix it in. Batter will be thin.
  6. Pour into well greased and floured baking pans.
  7. Bake 30 to 35 minutes in 350° oven.

The Frosting

Directions

  1. Beat together cocoa and melted butter in a large bowl until combined.
  2. Add milk and vanilla.
  3. Beat until smooth.
  4. Gradually beat in sifted confectioners’ sugar until desired consistency.
